Dubai, UAE, 14 August 2016: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)’s vision adheres to the directives of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to involve the youth in the development process, as the future of the UAE’s development is based on core values, led by the youth. DEWA believes that the youth are the driving force behind creating a brighter future. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders and the cornerstone of the sustainable development adopted by our wise leadership. DEWA strives to actively participate in initiatives involving the youth, both in DEWA, and in society in general, to achieve the Dubai Plan 2021, to transform Dubai into a city of happy, creative, and empowered people. As part of our firm belief that the Emirati youth possess the required skills that will contribute towards achieving DEWA’s vision and help transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world, we provide training and scholarships programmes, and aim to develop a generation that realises the role of professional work in achieving sustainable development, in addition to creating quality jobs that benefit both the citizens and the country. The DEWA Academy was established as part of our commitment towards supporting the Emiratisation strategy, and strengthening the skills of Emirati students, by providing vocational education and onsite training, according to the highest vocational education and training levels. DEWA works to arm Emirati students with the skills to work within technical fields. DEWA works with a number of high school and university students, and provides them with summer training courses in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, business management, finance, and legal affairs. A total of 322 students have been trained over the last 3 years, in addition to a number of first year university, college, and high school students. This also includes field training, which is a major requirement for graduating Emirati students. DEWA has begun providing scholarships in technical fields, to Emirati students who completed high school in 1998. DEWA offers 130 scholarships annually, for technical specialties.
DEWA is the first government organisation to host Youth Circles, approved by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to provide a platform to discuss the best practices and the most important topics related to the youth and their aspirations, and come up with practical solutions and innovative ideas to the challenges they face. We are honoured that DEWA has been announced as one of the first organisations to provide support for Marriage Endowment. This supports the marriage of young Emiratis and promotes building successful families for a cohesive society that keeps its identity and traditions. The family is the foundation for society to develop sustainably. DEWA hosted the 9th Anwar (lights) Dubai mass wedding for its Emirati employees. This supports Emirati families, and helps the Emirati youth start a stable and happy married life. This is an investment in the sustainability of our human and natural resources.
We have doubled the number of students enrolled in the second batch of the Carbon Ambassadors Programme to 75, between 2015 and 2016.
Students of the second batch support the former Ambassadors’ efforts towards building a greener and sustainable future, emphasising their commitment to supporting sustainable development in the region, as well as Emirati Youth. The Carbon Ambassadors are the next generation of leaders and experts who will implement ambitious National strategies and plans as well as contribute to innovating new initiatives and programmes.
As part of it Social Corporate Responsibility (CSR) and its vision to become sustainable innovative world-class utility, DEWA adopts a clear strategy to promote Emiratisation, and hire Emirati staff in specialised and technical positions. DEWA participates in employment exhibitions and activities, and organises special events to attract Emirati talent who are interested in working in technical fields, and others. As part of DEWA’s workforce budget for 2016, DEWA has implemented 300 new positions for UAE citizens. DEWA has achieved excellent results in Emiratisation, with UAE Nationals comprising 84.78% of senior management and 46.48% in middle management, as of Q4 of 2015.
