HIGHLIGHTING CULTIVATION OF RAGI, KARNATAKA’S STAPLE CROP

VST Tillers Launches Equipment to Make Ragi Cultivation Highly Productive and Efficient

Ragi is the staple food of rural Karnataka, but not much thought had gone into Ragi cultivation. Realising the need for mechanized equipment to improve productivity and efficiency, Bengaluru-based VST Tillers & Tractors has launched Mini Tractor-mounted Seed Drill which is expected to revolutionise ragi cultivation in Karnataka and elsewhere.

The four-wheel drive compact tractor of VST Tillers combined with the National seed drill is going to be a boon to small and marginal farmers who are into ragi cultivation. After field trials by VST Tillers and subsequent testing by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, the equipment is available for farmers from this season. The innovative equipment is a boon to small and marginal farmers who have are not able to get farm labourers due to large-scale migration to cities. Besides, ragi is sown for a depth not more than 2.5 cm for proper germination. The use of big tractors which dig deeper have not been conducive for germinated seed emergence and growth, according to                          Dr. H.G.Ashoka, Professor and Head of the Department, Agricultural     Engineering, UAS.

With the introduction of the compact tractor, VST Tillers is taking mechanized farming of Karnataka’s staple crop – ragi – to the next level. While there have been a number of post harvesting equipment, the right combination of seeding and weeding machineries was not available, thus affecting productivity.

Mechanisation of agriculture

Indian agriculture is undergoing a sea change with increased mechanization, driven by various factors such as migration of farm labour; new and improved methods of cultivation; enhanced interaction between agricultural scientists and farmers; and government policies giving emphasis to mechanization for increased productivity. But the small and marginal farmer was almost left out of this transformation as the farmer could ill-afford equipment and depended on manual or animal labour to fulfill farming needs. Understanding the needs of the small and marginal farmers, VST Tillers is introducing a series of innovative equipment to the community.
