With the popular festival of Onam just around the corner, people in Tamil Nadu and Kerala are gearing up to welcome the generous king Mahabali once again. The increased festive fervour can also be witnessed in the travel footprints in the region, as outlined in the recently released travel trends by Paytm.

The company’s research indicates that travellers between their mid-twenties and mid forties are travelling in the largest numbers, making up more than 65% of the total bookings to and from Tamil Nadu and Kerala on August 25. Another interesting takeaway was the contribution of youngsters and senior citizens, accounting for 9% and 6% respectively of the overall travel bookings.

Trains are the most preferred mode for travellers and accounted for 56% of the overall bookings on Paytm, while Flights grabbed the second position with a 23% contribution, followed closely by bus bookings at 22%. Average ticket price was Rs.5,087 for flights, Rs.740 for bus, and Rs.626 for train bookings respectively. A majority of this surge in traffic came from tier-I cities like Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Kochi. Tier-II cities were not far behind, with Kozhikode, Alappuzha, Kollam, Tirunelveli, and Salem contributing the most to the festive traffic. 66% of all bookings were done by men, whereas women made 34% of the total reservations.
Mr. Abhishek Rajan, Vice President - Paytm said, “Festivals have a unique place in our country and provide us the perfect opportunity to reunite with our loved ones, rekindle childhood memories, and meet new people. Onam is known to offer the perfect combination of these aspects through extensive social gatherings and vibrant cultural events. It gives us immense pleasure to have served as an enabler of this festivity.”

About Paytm Travel

Paytm has acquired a significant share of India’s online travel market within a short span of time. With more than 85% of its train ticket bookings coming from the app, Paytm has been able to effectively address the needs of mobile-first travelers. This growth was largely driven by its strong penetration in non-metros coupled with product disruptions like insurance against bus ticket cancellation, zero cancellation processing fee on flight tickets and instant refunds. It has chosen Bengaluru as the base for its travel business and is looking to ramp up its travel team to 250 in the coming months. This year it is looking to further establish itself as a dominant player in the industry.
