Celebrating “Madras” at Southern Spice, Taj Coromandel

Southern Spice, the country’s most iconic South Indian specialty restaurant at Taj Coromandel celebrates Madras Week with a special Madras menu that takes us back in time. Promising the most-genuine culinary experiences, the team of chefs at Southern Spice led by Executive Chef Sujan Mukherjee has curated a special a la carte menu reminiscent of the good old days when Chennai was known as Madras, and the menu reflects the flavours of those times!

The Rose Milk; Paanagam; or the Masala Paal are the perfect way to commence this meal! Sip on delicious Vazhathandu Semiya Soup straight from the streets of Mambalam (Plantain pith and vermicelli soup) or the Aatukkaal Soup With Kari Wada (Mutton leg bone soup with minced lamb galletes) for non-vegetarian. The vegetarian starters include Mundiri Pakoda (Cashew nut fritters) and Masala Paniyaram (Spiced onion stuffed lentil and rice dumplings cooked in a cast iron mould), while non-vegetarians can savour Kozhi Podimas (Chicken strips tossed with Madras chilli and sliced onions); Eral Thokku (Bay prawns cooked with tomato and shallot); and Liver Pepper Masala (Mutton liver spiked with black pepper).

The mains include Chepankezhangu Roast (Crisp fried colocasia tossed with powdered spices); Paruppu Urundai Kozhambu (Lentil dumplings simmered in coconut and fennel curry); Kadal Varaal Kozhambu (Butter fish in a tangy tomato curry); and the much-loved Mutton Saalna (Succulent lamb morsels in a thin ground coconut gravy). For those who like their Kothu Parotas, try the Vegetarian Kothu Parota or the Mutton Kothu Parota.

Nothing like a delightful bowl of Broken Wheat Payasam; or Boondi With Mukkani Ice Cream to end this fantastic meal experience!
