Even decades after her passing, Marilyn Monroe continues to be a significant symbol of pop culture. She was rated sixth on the list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood that was compiled by the American Film Institute in the year 1999.

During World War II, she was working in a factory when she was discovered by a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit. This resulted in the beginning of a lucrative pin-up modeling journey, which in turn led to brief movie deals with 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures. Late in 1950, she secured a new deal with Fox after a string of supporting appearances in a variety of movies. She quickly rose to prominence as an actress during the course of the following two years, appearing in a number of films, which include comedies such as "As Young as You Feel" and "Monkey Business," as well as dramatic movies like "Clash by Night" and "Don't Bother to Knock."  Marilyn Monroe had established herself as one of the most marketable celebrities in Hollywood, by the year 1953. She had starring parts in the movie noir Niagara, as well as the comedies Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire, which established her celebrity image as a "dumb blonde." However, she later returned to act in The Seven Year Itch which released in 1955, and is considered to be one of the most commercially successful films of her career. Marilyn Monroe established her own film production firm in 1954, at a time when the studio was still hesitant to amend the terms of her deal. She devoted the year 1955 to the establishment of the firm and started attending the Actors Studio in the same year to learn method acting with Lee Strasberg. In the latter part of that year, Fox renewed her agreement, which increased the amount of control she had over her work and her compensation. Her later appearances included a performance that received widespread recognition in the 1956 movie Bus Stop, as well as her first indie film, which was titled The Prince and the Showgirl in 1957. Some Like It Hot in 1959 was both critically and financially acclaimed, and it was for her performance in the film that she was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress. The movie The Misfits in 1961 was the final picture she finished. The public was very interested in the turbulent personal life of Monroe. She had problems with addiction and with her mood.

Both of her highly famous marriages, to Joe DiMaggio, a former baseball star, and to Arthur Miller, a writer, ended in divorce. Her demise on August 4, 1962, at the age of 36, was the result of an overdose at her residence in Los Angeles. It was determined that suicide was the most likely cause of her death.

Her mother was originally known as Gladys Pearl Monroe and came from a poor family in the Midwest that relocated to California at the turn of the century.

Marilyn Monroe  husband: Gladys tied the knot with John Newton Baker who was nine years older than her at the time, when she was just 15 years old. They had two kids Robert born in 1917 and passed away in 1933 and Berniece born in 1919 and passed away in 2014.In 1923, she had her petition for divorce and request for exclusive custody of the children granted. However, shortly afterwards, Baker abducted the children and transported them to his home state of Kentucky. The fact that Monroe had a sister in the family was not revealed to her until she was 12 years old, and she did not get to see Berniece until she was an adult. Following the end of her marriage, Gladys found employment at Consolidated Film Industries as a film negative cutter. She tied the knot with Martin Edward Mortensen in 1924, but the couple divorced later in 1928, after parting ways just a few months after the wedding. DNA analysis conducted in 2022 revealed that Monroe's biological father was Charles Stanley Gifford, a co-worker of Gladys's from the year 1925 with whom she had an encounter. She has 2 siblings. In siblings she has 1 half-brother brother and 1 half-sister. Her half brothers name is Robert Kermitt Baker and half sisters name is Berniece Baker Miracle. Her Nationality is American and ethnicity is English, small amounts of Scottish, Irish, and Welsh. Marilyn Monroe followed Judaism as her religion. She converted from Christianity to Judaism after marriage.

Despite the fact that Gladys was emotionally and financially unprepared for a kid, Monroe had a secure and happy life in her early years. In the little town of Hawthorne, Gladys made the decision to entrust her daughter to the care of Albert and Ida Bolender, evangelical Christian foster parents. She too resided there for the first six months, until work made her relocate to the city. She subsequently started seeing her daughter on weekends.Gladys took Monroe, then seven years old, in with her when she purchased a modest home in Hollywood with a loan from the Home Owners' Loan Corporation during the summer of 1933.They had tennants, actors George and Maude Atkinson, together with their daughter Nellie, who lived with them at the home.Gladys had a mental breakdown in January of 1934, which led to a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia for her condition. After living in a retirement home for a while, she was sent to the Metropolitan State Hospital. She spent the remainder of her life in and out of hospitals and had very little interaction with Monroe because of her condition.Grace Goddard, a close buddy of Monroe's mother, was appointed as the guardian of both Monroe and her mother when the state made Monroe a ward of the state.

The following four years saw several changes in Monroe's living circumstances. She continued to live with the Atkinson family for the first sixteen months of her life. She had always been a timid young lady, but after developing a stutter, she became even more reclusive. She spent a short time living with Grace Goddard and her husband, Erwin "Doc," as well as with two other families, during the summer of 1935. Grace put her in the Los Angeles Orphans Home in September 1935. Monroe's friends told her that the orphanage was "a model institution," but she felt alone there. Grace became Monroe's formal guardian in 1936 after being encouraged to do so by the staff at the orphanage, who believed that Monroe would be better living in a family setting. However, she did not remove Monroe from the institution until the summer of 1937.Due to Doc's inappropriate behavior with Monroe, her second visit with the Goddards lasted for just a few short months. After that, she spent short amounts of time in Los Angeles and Compton, both with Grace's friends and family, as well as her own relatives. The circumstances of Monroe's youth were the impetus for her early desire to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. In September of 1938, Marilyn Monroe moved to Sawtelle to live with Grace's aunt, Ana Lower, where she established a more stable living arrangement for herself. She attended weekly Christian Science services with Lower while still attending Emerson Junior High School. Monroe was an average student overall, but she excelled in writing and made significant contribution to the school newspaper. Around the beginning of 1941, Marilyn Monroe relocated back to Van Nuys to be with the Goddard family because of the deteriorating health of the old Lower. She started high school the same year at Van Nuys High School. The corporation that Doc Goddard worked with transferred him to a new location in West Virginia in 1942. The Goddards couldn't take Marilyn Monroe out of California because of laws protecting children, so she would have to go back to the orphanage. On June 19, 1942, a few days after she turned 16, she found a solution to the problem by marrying the son of their neighbors, a factory worker named James Dougherty, who was 21 years old. After that, Marilyn Monroe decided not to continue her education and instead became a housewife. She felt that she and Dougherty were an inappropriate fit for one another, and she subsequently revealed that she was "dying of boredom" throughout their marriage. Dougherty enrolled in the Merchant Marine in 1943 and was posted on Santa Catalina Island, so Marilyn Monroe relocated there with him.

In the last few months of her life, Marilyn Monroe called the 12305 Fifth Helena Drive in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles home.On the evening of August 4, 1962, her housekeeper Eunice Murray was staying at the house for the night. On August 5, at 3 a.m., Murray awakened with the unsettling realization that something was amiss. She saw that there was light coming from beneath Monroe's bedroom door, but she was unable to obtain a response from her and noticed that the door was locked. After that, Murray contacted Monroe's psychiatrist, Ralph Greenson, who arrived at the home immediately. Greenson broke into Monroe's bedroom via a window to discover her dead in her bed.Monroe's doctor, Hyman Engelberg, arrived to the site at around 3:50 in the morning and declared her dead at the location. Notification was sent to the Los Angeles Police Department at 4:25 in the morning. On August 4, between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., Monroe passed away, and the toxicology analysis revealed that acute barbiturate intoxication was the cause of death.Monroe's untimely demise made the front pages of newspapers in the U.S. and Europe.

Her memorial, which took place on August 8 at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery, was a private affair, and only her closest friends and acquaintances were present.Joe DiMaggio, Monroe's half-sister Berniece Baker Miracle, and Monroe's business manager Inez Melson were the ones responsible for making the arrangements for the memorial ceremony. The streets that around the cemetery were packed with hundreds of onlookers. After her death, Monroe was ultimately laid to rest in the Corridor of Memories' at Crypt No. 24.

    Marilyn Monroe Career

Dougherty was sent to the Pacific in April 1944, and he would spend the most of the next two years serving there.Monroe relocated to Van Nuys, California, to live with her in-laws and started working at the Radioplane Company, a weapons manufacturer located there. She crossed paths with David Conover, late in 1944, a photographer who had been dispatched to the facility by the First Motion Picture Unit of the United States Army Air Forces to take images of the female employees there in an effort to improve morale. Despite the fact that none of her photographs were chosen for publication, she gave up her job at the factory in January of 1945 and started modelling for Conover and his associates. In August of 1945, she moved out on her own and entered a deal with the Blue Book Model Agency, opposing her husband, who was away serving in the military.

The modeling agency thought that Marilyn Monroe's body was more suited for pin-up modeling than for high fashion modeling; as a result, the majority of her work was displayed in commercials and men's publications. She decided to give herself a more professional appearance by bleaching and straightening her hair.Monroe quickly became one of the agency's most aspirational and hard-working models, according to Emmeline Snively, the owner of the modeling agency. By the beginning of 1946, she had already been featured on the front cover of 33 different magazines, including Pageant, Laff, U.S. Camera, and Peek. Monroe sometimes worked as a model under the name Jean Norman. In June of 1946, Monroe entered a deal with an acting agency with Snively's assistance.

She had an interview with Paramount Pictures, but it did not go well, so Ben Lyon, an executive at 20th Century Fox, decided to give her a screen audition instead.Head executive Darryl F. Zanuck didn't like the idea, but he gave her a standard six-month deal so that rival studio RKO Pictures wouldn't sign her.In August of 1946, when Monroe's agreement first went into effect, she and Lyon came up with the stage name "Marilyn Monroe." Lyon chose the first name after being reminded by the Broadway actress Marilyn Miller, and Monroe chose the last name since it was her mother's maiden name. She got a divorce from Dougherty, in September 1946, who opposed her profession. Marilyn Monroe first six months at Fox were spent studying acting, singing, and dancing, as well as witnessing the process of filmmaking. In February of 1947, her agreement was extended, and she received her debut movie appearances, which were small parts in the movies Dangerous Years which released in 1947 and Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! which released in 1948.The studio also put her in the Actors' Laboratory Theatre, an acting school that taught the techniques of the Group Theatre. In spite of her excitement, her instructors believed that she was too timid and insecure to have a career in acting, and Fox did not extend her agreement in August of 1947.She went back to modeling while also performing side jobs at film studios, like acting as a dancing ""pacer"" behind the scenes to keep the stars on track during musical sets.

Marilyn Monroe remained a student at the Actors' Lab because she was so focused on achieving success in the acting world. She appeared in a few scenes in the play Glamour Preferred at the Bliss-Hayden Theater, but the production was cut short after just a handful of runs. In order to build her networking skills, she made a point of visiting the offices of producers, became friends with the gossip writer Sidney Skolsky, and began the habit of hosting prominent male visitors at studio gatherings when she was working at Fox.Monroe's appearance was meant to resemble that of Rita Hayworth, at Columbia, and she had her hair bleached to a platinum blonde. She started collaborating with Natasha Lytess, the top acting instructor at the studio, and she continued to look up to her all the way until 1955. Her sole movie for the studio was the low-budget musical Ladies of the Chorus in 1948, in which she played a chorus girl who is pursued by a rich man. It was her first leading role. She also auditioned for the main part in Born Yesterday in 1950, but in September 1948, her agreement was not extended. The next month, Ladies of the Chorus was made available to the public, but it was not a commercial hit.

After her employment at Columbia came to an end, Marilyn Monroe went back to her modeling career. She filmed an advertisement for Pabst beer and appeared in John Baumgarth calendars, both under the name "Mona Monroe." Soon after she left Columbia, she met Johnny Hyde, who was the vice president of the William Morris Agency. He took her under his wing and made her his mistress. Marilyn Monroe was offered supporting parts in a number of movies, because of Hyde which included Joseph Mankiewicz's drama "All About Eve" in 1950 and John Huston's movie noir "The Asphalt Jungle in 1950." Both of these movies have received high praise from film critics. Even though she only appeared on screen for a few minutes in the second one, she was featured in Photoplay and, as per biographer Donald Spoto, she "went successfully from movie model to serious actress."Hyde was successful in securing a seven-year deal with 20th Century-Fox for Marilyn Monroe in December of 1950.According to the provisions of the agreement, Fox has the option of terminating the deal at the end of each year.  Only a few days later, Hyde passed away from a heart attack, which left Marilyn Monroe in a state of complete despair.

Marilyn Monroe appeared in supporting characters in three Fox comedies in 1951, which included As Young as You Feel, Love Nest, and Let's Make It Legal. All three of these comedies were modestly successful. Her prominence with audiences was also expanding. She was getting several thousand fan letters a week, and the army newspaper Stars and Stripes called her "Miss Cheesecake of 1951," which represented the tastes of soldiers in the Korean War. Marilyn Monroe was honored with the title of "best young box office personality" by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in February of 1952.

Three of Monroe's films were produced shortly after to capitalize on popular interest: Clash by Night, Don't Bother to Knock, and We're Not Married!Soon after commencing her contract with Fox, she enrolled in acting workshops with Michael Chekhov and mime Lotte Goslar. Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock featured her in a variety of roles, and both films showcased her acting abilities. She had a role as a fish cannery worker in the former movie, which was a drama featuring Barbara Stanwyck and was directed by Fritz Lang. In order to prepare for the role, she spent some time working in a fish cannery in Monterey. She got good reviews for her work. The second movie was a thriller in which Monroe played a babysitter with a mental illness, which Zanuck utilized as an opportunity to evaluate her performance capabilities in a more demanding dramatic role. It got mixed reviews from critics. Monroe appeared in three more comic movies that focused on her sensuality in the year 1952. She had a small part in O. Henry's Full House alongside Charles Laughton, playing the role of a nineteenth-century street walker.

Marilyn Monroe was in three movies that came out in 1953 namely the Technicolor movie noir Niagara which was the first movie. It was loved by the audiences. Monroe and her makeup artist, Allan ""Whitey"" Snyder, by that time had created her ""trademark"" look: dark, arched brows, pale skin, ""glistening"" red lips, and a beauty mark. Monroe continued to draw attention to herself by donning provocative clothing, most notably at the Photoplay awards in January 1953, when she received the award for "Fastest Rising Star."A gold lamé pleated "sunburst" waist-tight dress with a deep decolleté that was created by William Travilla for the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was destined to become a hit, despite the fact that it appeared in the movie very briefly. Her second movie of 1953, the satirical musical comedy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes solidified her screen identity as a "dumb blonde." The story of the film, which was adapted from both the book written by Anita Loos and the stage production of the play, centers on two "gold-digging" showgirls portrayed by Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell.Betty Grable, who had been 20th Century-most Fox's popular ""blonde bombshell"" in the 1940s, was the initial choice for the part that eventually went to Marilyn Monroe. However, Monroe was quickly overtaking Grable as a figure who could appeal to both male and female viewers. She and Russell pushed their hands and footprints into the wet pavement outside of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in June as a part of the movies advertising campaign. Soon after, the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was made available to the public and quickly became one of the year's most commercially successful movies.

Marilyn Monroe made her first appearance on television in September, appearing as Jack Benny's dream lady in a segment of the Jack Benny Show titled "Honolulu Trip." In the movie How to Marry a Millionaire, which was launched in November, she appeared alongside Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall. This was her third movie of the year. The successful concept of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was replicated in this movie with Monroe playing the role of a naive model who joins forces with her pals in an effort to seek wealthy husbands. It was only the second movie ever to be produced in the CinemaScope format, which is a widescreen format that was developed by Fox in the hopes that it would encourage viewers to return to movie theaters at a time when television was starting to generate losses for film studios. Even though the reviews were mixed, the movie was Monroe's  most commercially successful at the box office up to that time in her career. In 1953 and 1954, Marilyn Monroe was named to the yearly list of the Top Ten Money Making Stars, and Fox historian Aubrey Solomon claims that she became the studio's "greatest asset" with CinemaScope during this time period.
