Real Betis Fails to Deliver Against Their City Rivals FC Sevilla

The 13th round of La Liga ended on November 10th and marked a new defeat for Real Betis against their main rivals FC Sevilla. Despite playing in front of their fans “Los Verdiblancos” are still trying to find their rhythm, following the squad changes that took place during the summer.

Betis loses but positive statistics can be highlighted

Unfortunately for Betis, the match ended 1-2 for FC Sevilla, even though the first half had been balanced and ended with a draw. Taking a closer look at the details, it wasn’t such a bad match for Nabil Fekir and the squad.

Betis managed to keep the ball possession at 55% while also creating 18 goal scoring opportunities. It had 23 free kicks and not less than 8 on-goal shorts, but ultimately, FC Sevilla proved to be the most efficient team, managing to score twice through L. Ocampos and L. de Jong.

It's not the best first half of the season for Real Betis, which currently stands on the 17th place, 4 points above the relegation zone. After bringing Rubi as a manager at the start of the season, plus several new important signings and a change of sponsorship with easyMarkets, expectations around the team were high. Some analysts predicted Betis would manage to exceed its past season’s performance, when it finished 10th.

But with 6 defeats, 4 draws, and only 3 wins, Betis managed to grab only 13 points so far, losing valuable points against relatively-small opponents like Eibar, Valladolid, Osasuna, and Getafe. The defeat against FC Sevilla came after two positive results. Although smaller clubs managed to put Betis in great difficulties, the team performed extremely well against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, where it did not concede a goal. One point against the second top-rated club in the league is encouraging.

During the 11th round, Betis managed to defeat Celta Vigo by 2-1 at home, but still, the overall performance this season is disappointing. The frustration is even bigger if we look at the statistics. The team manages to create great goal chances but somehow is not able to have that efficiency in the last third of the pitch.

Looking ahead, Valencia and Mallorca are the next opponents of Betis, both teams not showing great performances so far during the season. It may be the chance for Rubi and his team to earn some points and pull away from bottom part of the table.
