TIPS ON ENGINE OIL FOR BIKES

Always start your engine and leave it idle for a few minutes, before changing the engine oil. Only after that drain the oil out of the motorbike.

The timeframe to change engine oil in your motorcycle is very important. IN general for motorcycles which are between 100-200cc, you should change the engine oil in the range of 1000-1500 KMs. While for motorcycles between 200-500cc, you should change engine oil between 1500-4000 KMs.

Always make sure to use the correct grade and service rating for your bike.

Make sure to check your bike’s user manual for API and JASO recommendations.

Your riding style matters determines when you need to change the motor oil. If you ride at full throttle more often than not, then you should to change the oil way before the deadline. If you are riding your bike on daily basis, then a timely engine oil change is a must. But, if your motorcycle mostly sits in the garage for months, then it's a good idea to check the quality of the engine oil inside the bike, before starting it. It's best if you pour a fresh can of engine oil in such cases.

If you are riding long distances where you cover 1000-1500 KMs at a stretch. It's best to change the engine oil immediately after you complete your journey.

Make sure to change the drain plug once in a while to prevent unwanted oil leaks.

Always select engine oils best on the grading rather than basing your decision on a brand name. Always choose engine oils that are quality certified by API and JASO.

It's a good practice to change the oil filter every time you change the engine oil.

It is always best to use the engine oil which is recommended by the bike manufacturer. If you wish to change your engine oil brand then make sure you do your reseacrh thoroughly before switching.

TYPES OF BIKE ENGINE OIL

Conventional Engine Oil/Mineral Oil.

Synthetic Engine Oil.

Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil.

CONVENTIONAL ENGINE/MINERAL OIL

Mineral oil is usually used for brand new bikes. Mineral oil is the lowest grade engine oil available. But it comes to new bikes it's used to ensure proper mating of the running parts of the engine. The oil polishes the metal parts on the inside of the engine making it smooth. CONVENTIONAL ENGINE/MINERAL OIL is the perfect lubricant for 2-stroke motorcycles. As this engine oil is pocket-friendly and gets the job done effortlessly.

SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL

Compared to conventional oil, the stickyness of synthetic engine oil is lower. This reduces the friction and wear and tear of the engine and increases the life of the engine. It also improves the fuel efficiency of the motorcycle. With all these benefits synthetic oils are much costlier compared to conventional mineral oil.

SEMI-SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL

This is a blend of crude oil and synthetic elements. This is a hybrid oil and it's cooling nature is amazing and degrades slowly in comparison to mineral oil. It's not recommended to use semi-synthetic oil on a high-performance engine as it may cause premature wear and tear of the engine and will reduce its life.

HOW THE ENGINE GETS IMPACTED BY WEATHER?

Weather plays a important role in the wear and tear of the mechanical parts of all types of machines, and it's true in the case of bike engines as well. Dry weather Causes more dust to accumulate in the engine whereas places with cold weather result in more friction within the engine if it's roughly revved. Moderate climate makes the cooling process slower for normal carburettor engines and humidity also has a role to play in impacting the life of the engine.

WHAT IS BIKES ENGINE OIL GRADES?

A measuring scale developed by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) are engine oil grades which indicate the performance of Engine oils with changing temperatures. It basically gives us a measure of its stickiness during operation.

For Example, let’s take:

5W 30

In which 5 stands for the low-temperature viscosity; The Lower this number the better it is for the engine to start at low temperatures.

The W in this is for WINTER

The 30 in this determines the high-temperature viscosity; The Higher this number in the grade the better it is for the engine to start at high temperatures.
