His first opponent was Azamat Kanybek Uulu of Kyrgyzstan, whom he defeated 3:0 in the Round of 16 in the World Championships. The Uzbekistani Hurshidbek Normatov was his quarter-final opponent, and he defeated him by a score of 3:0 in order to advance to the semi-finals. On September 5, 2015, Vikas Krishan Yadav reached the final round of the Middleweight division and was defeated by Bektemir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan, earning him a silver medal and the title of World Champion.

During the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, Vikas Krishan Yadav earned a gold medal after defeating the Australian team as well as Zambia, Northern Ireland, and Cameroon. He made history by being the first Indian male boxer to win gold medals at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games in the same year. In the 2018 Asian Games, he took home a bronze medal. Because of a significant eye injury, he was unable to compete in any further fights for the time being. By defeating Japan's Sewon Okazawa, World No. 6 and third seed in the 69kg weight class, Vikas Krishan Yadav booked his place to the Tokyo Olympics. In the semifinals, he overcame Kazakhstan' Ablaikhan Zhussupov to earn his place in the final. Neeraj Goyat, a close buddy, was the inspiration for his weight loss, which took him from 75kg to 69kg.  His achievement also made him the second Indian male boxer, following Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh, to compete for the Third Olympics. Vikas Krishan Yadav is presently competing in the middleweight division, which is the same division in which Vijender Singh earned an Olympic bronze medal in the 2008 Games in Beijing.
