Von Hell's former band Turbonegro is best known for their tongue-in-cheek humour about homosexual aesthetics and punk rock antics, as well as for their formation of a genre they labelled "death punk." The band was created in the late 1980s and released a few records before dissolving in 1998 due to von Hell's heroin addiction, which rendered him unable to perform on stage. Turbonegro reformed in 2002 following a stint in recovery, however the band announced in 2010 that it would be on an indefinite hiatus.
The primary reason for this was his newfound sobriety and commitment to his family. It was with the song "Rom for alle" that he and Maria Solheim shared the No. 1 position on the Norwegian Singles Chart in 2009. The song remained at the top of the charts for three weeks, including one week on the Christmas chart in 2009. From 2010 Von Hell starred in Cornelis, a Swedish film about the singer-songwriter Cornelis Vreeswijk, in which he portrayed the title character. Von Hell and his new band Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult made their debut album, I Declare: Treason on June 6, 2011.
In late 2011, he served as a judge on the Norwegian reality television show Idol. His biography was authored by writer and poet Havard Rem and published in Norway in October 2012, in which he speaks honestly about his life. Egomania is the first single from von Hell's planned solo album Egomania, and it was made available to the public on August 31st 2018. The album was launched on November 2nd through Sony Music/Century Media worldwide. He worked on the record alongside guitarist and band member Eric Bachman, also known as Cat Casino, on the writing process. The song "Fake It" was selected for participation in the Melodi Grand Prix 2019 on January 25, 2019, and will represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel.
