Jenny Thompson is one of most successful Olympians in history, having won a total of 12 medals, including 8 gold medals, at the Summer Olympics in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. When she was 7 years old she started her swimming in her hometown in Dover, New Hampshire at Cedardale Country Club in Groveland, Massachusetts.
While swimming indoors, she began at the Danvers YMCA when she was eight to 10 years old, and then at the Andover-North Andover YMCA when she was ten years to 12 years of age. Jenny Thompson started to swim for the Seacoast Swimming Association at the age of 12 under the direction of Amy and Mike Parratto, and then transferred to Dover at 13 years of age. As a 14-year-old in 1987, she made her international debut at the Pan American Games in the 50-meter freestyle and sttod third in the 100-meter freestyle events.
As a member of the winning 4x100-meter freestyle relay team for the United States of America in 1991, she earned her first world championship. She also set the world records in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona when she competed the event. When Jenny Thompson was attending Stanford University, she competed for the Stanford Cardinal swimming and diving team in both National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Pacific-10 Conference events. Jenny Thompson was the recipient of the Honda Sports Award for Swimming and Diving in 1994–95, which acknowledged her as the most outstanding female collegiate swimmer of the year.
