Ray Ewry place of birth is Lafayette, Indiana. As a young boy he got polio. When he was younger, he was using his wheelchair and it was thought that he might be permanently paralysed. Ray Ewry did his own workouts and managed to overcome his disorder. From 1890 to 1897 he went to Purdue University where he captained the track and field team, participated American football and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He has done his graduation in mechanical engineering at Purdue and later he shifted to New York. He served as a hydraulics engineer and was a member of the New York Athletic Club. His expertise was in the standing high jumps, which are now defunct events such as the standing high jump, standing long jump, and standing triple jump, all of which he competed in.

He earned eight gold medals at the Olympic Games and 2 gold medals at the Intercalated Games were awarded during his career (1906 in Athens). His accomplishments place him among the most decorated Olympians. The participant jumped without a run-up in these events, which are equivalent to their modern, regular versions. Ewry showed to be the world's best standing jumper, beating all other competitors. At his very first Olympics, which took place in Paris in 1900, he earned a gold medals in all 3 standing jumps In an interesting coincidence, all 3 finals were held on the same day (July 16).
