Sawao Kato is one of the most decorated Olympians in the history of the sport. From 1968 and 1976, he earned a number of 12 Olympic medals, 8 of which were gold medals. His first appearance in the Olympics was in 1968, when he participated with his older brother Takeshi. They won the championship match, with Sawao bringing home gold medals in the all-around and on the floor. He finished third in the rings competition.
At the 1972 Olympics, the Japanese men's gymnastics team completely dominated the competition, winning 15 out of a total of 21 individual medals.
