From May 2017, Manpreet Singh has been the skipper of the men's national field hockey team. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, he along with his team won a Bronze medal. His playing position is defensive midfielder. At the age of 19, he made his international debut for India. In 2012, he played for India at the Summer Olympics, and in 2014, he was selected Asia's Junior Player of the Year. For the 2016 Summer Olympics he was selected to the Indian Olympic team.
Padma Shri Pargat Singh, a previous captain of Indian hockey who originates from the same Mithapur village where manpreet resides served as his inspiration. He was also fascinated by the prizes his older brother received while participating in the sport. Manpreet Singh began playing hockey on a regular basis in 2002, when his mother confined him in his room to keep him from playing the sport. He did, however, manage to get away in the end. When he earned first prize in the 2013 Sultan of Johor Cup, which was a cash award of ₹500 his family began to support him fully. Manpreet Singh joined one of India's most prestigious hockey institutes, the Jalandhar's Surjit Hockey Academy in the year 2005. Manpreet Singh rose to fame with his international debut in 2011 as a member of the Indian youth squad.
Manpreet Singh captained the Indian men's team and won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The Indian team, led by him, mounted a remarkable return when they lost to Australia in the second match of the group stage, going on to beat Spain, Argentina and japan in quick order. In the quarter-finals they defeated Great Britain 3 - 1, but eventually lost to Gold Medalist and World No. 1 Belgium in the semi finals round by 2 - 5. India achieved the bronze medal after beating Germany 5-4 in the bronze-medal match. Since 1980, it was the first time the Indian hockey team had finished on the podium at an Olympic Games.
