    He represents South Australia and the Adelaide Strikers in local cricket. In 2010, he was the captain of the Greater Western Sydney Giants. When the Giants entered the Australian Football League in 2012,he was abandoned by the team and moved back home to South Australia, where he started playing local cricket. In the year 2013 Alex Carey made his first appearance as a specialist top-order batsman, but he didn't do well and was removed. Eventually, he was demoted to the bottom of the batting lineup and assigned to the position of wicketkeeper.

    Alex Carey participated in both Australian rules football and cricket as a young teen, and as he grew older, he began to compete at a greater level in football, representing Glenelg in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) reserves contest along with adults by the time he was 15 years old. Alex Carey was selected to South Australia's team in 2008, for the 2008 AFL Under 18 Championships, although he did not appear in any of the matches. He was a member of the 2008 entry of the AIS/AFL Academy. In 2009, he kept on to make progress, representing South Australia in the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships, as well as securing the SANFL Reserves Premiership with Glenelg.

    South Australia Cricket Association gave Alex Carey a deal as a starter, but Alex Carey rejected the offer and relocated to Sydney in 2010, where he entered the Greater Western Sydney Giants of the Australian Football League (AFL),who were competing in the TAC Cup for the season in preparation for their admittance into the AFL in 2012. Alex Carey led the team that advanced to the finals and, in spite of being absent for the last four rounds of the tournament because he was hurt, he was awarded the team's best and fairest player. In the North East Australian Football League he performed for them once more in 2011, however was not selected for their maiden AFL team for the 2012 season and was forced to come back to Adelaide.

    Alex Carey secured a contract with Sussex County Cricket Club in May 2019, to participate in the 2019 T20 Blast event in England. He was acquired by the Delhi Capitals in the 2020 Indian Premier League bidding, prior to the 2020 season of the IPL.

On 3 February 2018, he made his Australia Twenty20 International first appearance versus New Zealand.

    Alex Carey was appointed captain of Australia for the first One-Day International (ODI) versus the West Indies in July 2021, substituting Aaron Finch, who was absent due to a knee problem at the time of the game. This was the initial instance where he was made Australia's ODI captain even though he was already vice captain. Australia gained the first One-Day International (ODI) under his leadership by 133 runs, and Alex Carey also reached the milestones of 1000 ODI runs and 50 ODI wickets in the game.
