At a formal function held at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) in Mumbai, the two books were released by Prof. K.P. Kannan (Chairperson, Laurice Baker Centre of Habitat Studies, Thiruvananthapuram) and Prof. Mahendra Dev (Director, IGIDR, Mumbai) in presence of eminent scholars and academicians like Prof. Gopal Guru (Editor, Economic and Political Weekly), Prof. R. Ramakumar (Professor, NABARD Chair Professor, Centre for Study of Developing Economies, School of Development Studies, TISS, Mumbai), Prof. D.N. Reddy (Honorary Professor, the Institute for Human Development, New Delhi), Prof. Praveen Jha (Professor, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) and  Prof. Supriya RoyChowdhury (Professor, Institute for Economic and Social Change, Bengaluru) among others. Prof. Lalit K. Deshpande, former Conference President of the Indian Society of Labour Economics, a premier academic body in India, was also present on the occasion.

Prof. Alakh N Sharma, Eminent Labour Economists and Editor of the Indian Journal of Labour Economics, praised the book, Perspectives on Neoliberalism, Labour and Globalization in India. She said, “This volume edited by Dr. K. R. Shyam Sundar has contributions from some well-known scholars, both from India and abroad, on various aspects relating to the political economy of labour and industrial and labour relations in the wake of globalization. These articles cover a wide range of issues and will certainly make a good contribution to the study of political economy of labour. It is a befitting tribute to Professor L. K. Deshpande for which Dr. K. R. Shyam Sundar deserves appreciation.”

Prof. Mahendra Dev, Director and Vice-Chancellor, IGIDR showered praise on Globalization, Labour Market Institutions, Processes and Policies in India’. He said, “I compliment Prof. K.R. Shyam Sundar for bringing out essays in honour of such a distinguished labour economist like Prof. L.K. Deshpande. The edited book contains articles contributed by well-known scholars on labour, employment, labour institutions and industrial relations. One can learn a lot on this subject from the articles included in this volume. The introductory chapter by Prof. K.R. Shyam Sundar provides a very good overview of the issues and policies discussed by the contributors. This volume is also timely as the country has been discussing on employment growth and labour market reforms. This book is an important addition to the literature on labour market, labour institutions and industrial relations and will be useful for researchers, policy makers and those interested in labour and employment policies. The volume is a fitting tribute to Prof. L.K. Deshpande who has been a source of inspiration to many of us.”

The event comprised two panel discussions in the backdrop of launch of each of the books where experts analysed the contributions in the two books which in general focused on issues and aspects relating to the impact of globalization on the labour market and the industrial relations system with special reference to India.  The panelists and the experts praised the two books for making significant contribution in aiding an understanding of the pitfalls of neoliberal globalization, for making a serious attempt to provide alternatives to it and for providing comprehensive and insightful analyses of labour market institutions and policies in the post-reform period in India. The two books are seen as a fitting tribute to the lifelong scholarship of Prof. Lalit K Deshpande.

Eminent scholars like Prof. Dilip Nachne (Professor Emeritus, IGIDR, Mumbai), Prof. Vikas Chitre (Indian School of Political Economy, Pune), Mr. Rajeev Dubey (Member, ILO Governing Body), Prof. Vibhuti Patel (Professor, Advanced Centre for Women's Studies, TISS, Mumbai) among others praised the pioneering contribution made by Prof. Lalit K Deshpande in understanding the dynamics of labour market and the labour institutions in India and congratulated Dr. K.R. Shyam Sundar for bringing out the two important books on the study of labour.

The first book released – ‘Perspectives on Neoliberalism, Labour and Globalization in India’ employs a variety of perspectives such as Institutional, Social Democratic, Marxist, Gender and Informal, Biblical and Dalit, to critically examine the impact of neoliberal globalisation on both formal and informal sectors of the labour market and the industrial relations system. The narratives not only interrogate current institutions and paradigms, but also outline future developments.

The second book – ‘Globalization, Labour Market Institutions, Processes and Policies in India’ explores the effects of product market and labour market reforms on firms, labour institutions and labour rights in the economic and industrial relations system in India. India has over the years liberalized its economy through a broad range of reforms concerning the product market and complementing these it has also sought to reform the labour market and the industrial relations system. The book assesses the impact of these reforms on both the formal and informal labour markets in India, critically examines the labour processes and uncovers/describes precarious conditions of labour in various industries and occupations, and analyzes the dynamics involved in the making of industrial, employment and labour policies in contemporary India.

Talking about the books, Prof. K. R. Shyam Sundar said, “The aforementioned two sets of books constitute an organic whole in not only critically analysing through different conceptual lenses the very nature of and dynamics arising out the competitive market economy and their impact on labour institutions, processes and policies in the industrial relations system but also unravelling the disturbingly precarious plight of labour who is seen not so much as human beings worthy of respect and dignity but merely as a factor of production. The two books essentially argue for institutional, managerial and labour policy corrections to strike a golden balance between decent work and competitive policy dynamics and the contributions in the two books assume high significance in the current debate on high unemployment, rising informalization of labour and labour market reforms. The two books released today are my humble homage to the vast and pioneering contribution made by Prof. Lalit Deshpande in the field of labour economics”.

25th September, 2017:  XLRI- Xavier School of Management organized the 4th “Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Sustainable Development” on Saturday, 23rd September, 2017. Organised under the aegis of Fr Arrupe Center for Ecology and Sustainability (FACES), XLRI, in memory of the Founder of AMUL Dr. Verghese Kurien, otherwise known as “the Milkman of India”, the oration aims to provide a platform to listen to and learn from thought leaders, social entrepreneurs, development sector professionals and policy makers who have made a significant contribution to the idea of an empowered, prosperous and sustainable society.

This year, Dr. Ashok Khosla, eminent environmentalist and Founder & Chairman, Development Alternatives Group delivered the oration on the topic “The Machine Revolution: Fulfilling the Aspirations of Rural India”.

DR. ASHOK KHOSLA DELIVERS THE 4TH ‘DR. VERGHESE KURIEN MEMORIAL ORATION ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT’ AT XLRI

In his speech, Dr. Khosla said, “Some 70 years ago, Dr Verghese  Kurien created Amul, one of the most successful social enterprises in history.  Over this period, Amul pioneered technical, managerial, and institutional innovations that led to remarkable progress in India’s dairy industry – taking it from one of the least productive in the world to becoming the largest in any country within a few decades.  The immense magnitude of Dr Kurien’s contribution to the nutrition and health of the nation’s people, was accompanied with a comparable impact by the organisations he created on the incomes, social status, education of the dairy farmers, who were his first and most heartfelt concern.

He added, “The “White Revolution” brought enormous quantities of protein into the diets of India’s population, complementing the massive quantities of calories provided by the ‘Green Revolution’. The efforts of scientist/practitioners like Dr Kurien have certainly enabled large numbers of our fellow citizens to live healthier and more productive lives. Beyond nourishing food, people also have other basic needs such as water, energy for lighting and cooking, shelter, clothing, knowledge, health care and, above all, livelihoods and jobs.”

Emphasizing on the topic of his oration, ‘The Machine Revolution’, Dr. Khosla said, “Improving lives means improving productivity.  Productivity of labour, productivity of the land, and productivity of resources, such as water, energy and materials.  And improving productivity needs technology, to extend and multiply the capabilities of the human and animal effort on which the large numbers of our marginalised compatriots solely depend.  Technology means tools, instruments, methods and know-how, all of which can be subsumed under the metaphor of a “machine”.  Some of the machines needed for improving the economic performance of rural communities already exist, resulting from the 200 years of experience worldwide since the Industrial Revolution.  Others, needed to address the different life and livelihood issues that are peculiar to the rural economy, must be invented and delivered to a widespread market.  This requires “disruptive innovation” of the kind pioneered by the Green and White Revolutions: a new “Machine Revolution”.

To explain how ‘machines’ and institutions that can bring about the kinds of impacts on the lives and livelihoods of India’s rural poor, Dr. Khosla gave example of TARAlife, a social enterprise recently set up by the Development Alternatives Group in his speech.

TARAlife is the latest initiative of the globally recognized 35-year-old social enterprise Development Alternatives Group to motivate and help entrepreneurs create local industries and sales channels for basic needs and aspirational products, and simultaneously generate jobs, income and purchasing power in rural areas. It is a new enterprise was launched on 17 March 2017 as a market-based solution to poverty, hunger and environmental destruction with the purpose not only to deliver good financial returns on investment but also make much needed transformational economic, social and environmental contributions to India’s future.

In his address, Fr. E Abraham, S. J. Director of XLRI said, “Dr. Kurien’s remarkable life and achievements are an embodiment of his faith in the ability of the common man to exercise control over his destiny. This faith helped him to create world-class institutions that become shining examples of excellence (e.g., GCMMF, IRMA, NDDB, etc.), which enabled ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results.

He strongly believed that by placing technology and professional management in the hands of farmers, the living standards of millions of rural poor could be improved. His creation of community-owned co-operatives empowered millions of rural families, most of whom were landless and small farmers, in India.”

Remembering Dr. Kurien, Fr. Abraham said, “XLRI’s relationship with Dr. Kurien goes back to over 24 years. I personally had an enriching association with Dr Kurien and was greatly inspired with his visionary foresight and single-minded determination in executing his vision for the dairy sector and more importantly in helping raise the living standards of millions of rural milk producers across thousands of villages in India.”

“We decided to institute this Annual Oration to commemorate Dr Kurien’s legacy - because his life and work exemplifies the model for a responsible management leader, combining business skills with the larger good of the society and nation-building,” Fr. Abraham further added.

The event was also graced by Mr. T V Narendran, Chairman, XLRI Board of Governors and MD – Tata Steel, Fr. E Abraham, S. J. Director of XLRI and Dr. Ashis K. Pani, Dean (Academics), XLRI and Dr. Madhukar Shukla, Chairperson, Fr. Arrupe Center for Ecology & Sustainability, XLRI.

At the session, Dr. Yunus talked about businesses as a medium for solving problems and reducing the disparity between the various economic sections of the society. He went on to talk about the problems encountered in his crusade against loan-sharks and his commitment to serve the destitute who lacked access to basic financial services. He also highlighted the difference between helping through charity and helping through businesses which make money and ensure sustainable progress of the downtrodden sections of the society and advocated the latter. He held the current financial institutions responsible for the poverty prevalent in the world.

The banks are for rich people as it remained for the privileged class, he said adding that more than half of the world population has nothing to do with the banking. The seed of poverty prevailed in the system and we have to break it by reversing the system, he said while asking the future managers to build a road to reach the destination.

Speaking at the session, Dr. Yunus said, "I always did the just the opposite of what banks do. What banks did was for the rich. I reversed the system to make it work for the poor. The best thing that happened to me is that I never studied banking. I did things as it came and had no guarantees for the credit we gave. Luckily it worked".

He further said, addressing the students, “Create businesses to solve problems, not to generate money. The problem is not in the paper, but in the thinking. One does not have to change the world, just one person to begin with”. He illustrated the progress that societies can make through entrepreneurship by citing various examples from different parts of the world.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, often called “Banker to the Poor” is a world renowned social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. The Grameen Bank model of microfinance now operates in more than 100 countries worldwide. As of today, about 9 million people benefit from the financial services accorded by Grameen Bank and remarkably, 97% of the beneficiaries are women.

In 2012, he was described as one of 12 greatest entrepreneurs of the current era, and has also been named among the world’s top 100 most influential thinkers by the Foreign Policy magazine. Besides the Nobel Prize, Prof Yunus has been felicitated by numerous awards and honors including the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, Ramon Magsaysay Award (1984), the World Food Prize, the International Simon Bolivar Prize (1996), the Sydney Peace Prize (1998), the Seoul Peace Prize (2006), etc.

Speaking about the program, Rev. Dr. Francis Peter, S. J. Chairperson, CeRTEL, XLRI said, “Majority of the Principals take over their roles as school administrators without any formal leadership and managerial training. They often only have their teacher diploma, and move on from hands-on managing and developing some practical ways a mind set to run their institution. In response to the request of the Principals at a focused group discussion, CeRTEL has launched the PG Certificate in Applied Educational Leadership and Management for school teachers currently in or moving into leadership roles.”

This Specialized Year-Long Online Course has been carefully designed with the objective of improving leadership administration in the emerging educational contexts; acquire and adopt the right leadership style for managing change; keep abreast of research & educational practices that enhance teaching and learning; enable a deeper, critical understanding of the organization, and the environment we operate in; and, grow and develop along with colleagues, organization and stakeholders.

The program's curriculum includes sustained input, job-embedded activities, collegial discussions, and hands on project and is designed to provide participants with practical educational leadership skills. The course module spread across 12 months is divided into 4 modules and 15 courses. 10 of these courses will be delivered online in D2D (Desktop to Desktop) mode and the remaining 5 in workshop mode at XLRI campus. J. further added.

The day-long Colloquium which was held at XLRI Campus, Jamshedpur on 29th April, 2017 saw around 50 educationists, practitioners, Principals, various heads of chain schools, policy makers, representatives from NGOs, publishers and other stakeholders in school education brainstorm on key issues relating to education in an effort to find common ground where they can work together to bring about positive changes in school education in India.

The theme talk of the event was delivered by Mrs. Ruchi Narenndran, Managing Trustee, Education Office, JUSCO at the inaugural session. In her address, Mrs. Narendran emphasised on the needs for the teachers and educationists to be able to learn unlearn and relearn. “The demands of the job market today are very different from what it was a decade ago. Today we meet to teach our students to work collaboratively, to be self-starters, to be able to work with different cultures and above all to work with integrity. We also need to teach children to be able to sift through the vast ocean of data available, to interpret it in the right way anduse it appropriately. Teacher training and retraining is the need of the hour. This is an area which needs urgent attention and quick action,” she said. She also spoke about TATA Steel’s 1000 school program being run in Orissa which works very hard to bring about tangible improvements in school education in the state.

Delivering the welcome address at the event, Dr. A K Pani, Dean [Academics], XLRI stressed on the need for teachers’ development and revamping of the curriculum to make education more appropriate in the current scenario.

The day long programme comprised of various events including group works, panel discussions, and sharing of best practices by the participants.

Dr Sanjeev Varshney, Professor, XLRI, presented a white paper on The Status of School Education in India Today. The session on sharing of best practices saw participants share their innovative experiments on best practices which worked for them. The session also included a brainstorming group challenge where the members had to work out an innovative action plan for future direction.

“At the end of the Colloquium, what emerged was the need for competent, qualified and focused teachers in order to reform and revamp the education system within the given context. Vocational training must be made an integral part of education to make it all inclusive. A level oriented education system was proposed as one of the possible future actions. Education should not be prescribed: on the other hand, it should allow a student to explore himself/herself,” observed Dr. Francis Peter, S. J. about the event.

XLRI to host ‘9th National Conference on Social Entrepreneurship’

19th January 2017: The ‘9th National Conference on Social Entrepreneurship’ is being hosted by XLRI- Xavier School of Management on 27th to 29th January, 2017.

Around 150-170 social entrepreneurs, development sector professionals, policy makers, academics and management students are expected to assemble and confabulate on the theme - “Entrepreneurship for a Sustainable Planet” at the 3-day conference to be held at XLRI Campus in Jamshedpur.

Elaborating upon the theme, Prof. Madhukar Shukla, Chairperson of XLRI’s Fr Arrupe Center for Ecology & Sustainability and the coordinator for the conference said, “Since mid-20th century, following the industrial and post-industrial revolution the size and scale of human enterprises have grown exponentially. However, this growth has also subjected nature, and the manifold benefits it provides to humanity, to an increasing risk. Over the last few decades, we have witnessed increasing depletion of forests and natural resources, decline in animal population and extinction of species, increasing pollution of air and water resources, extreme weather conditions, etc. The 21st century presents humanity with a dual challenge to maintain the balance of nature in all of its many forms and functions and to create an equitable home for people on a finite planet. While the interdependence between the social, economic and environmental agendas is gradually being recognized at the highest levels (as defined in the Sustainable Development Goals), over the years, numerous entrepreneurial individuals have been experimenting and developing models of sustainable living. The learnings from such existing benchmarks and models is extremely relevant to inform development strategies, economic models, business models and lifestyle choices.”

“The two-fold purpose of the conference is to showcase innovative social entrepreneurial ventures by individual entrepreneurs, NGOs, corporates, and government agencies, and to provide a common platform for development sector professionals for sharing experiences, issues and knowledge,” Prof. Shukla further added.

The Keynote Speaker will be Mr. MV Ashok (Chief General Manager (Economic Analysis & Research), NABARD HO).
