Eight innovative best practices were identified by the eminent jury consisting of public health professionals, nutritionists, counselors, educators and social workers to be replicated by other schools.

Some of the innovations included Swachh Paanch Abhiyan by St Marys’ Convent, T.Dasarahalli or The Euro School, Chimney Hills, which has taken up the initiative to reducing weight of the school bags. VVR School’s initiative maintains oral health of children in their school campus on Sarjapur Main Rd. The South School, Dr. Vivekananda Layout, monitors nutritional values of the food that students bring in their tiffin boxes every day, while the Carmel Garden Public School has a certain time table for foods which the parents are supposed to follow, The South School also gives feedback to children on how they can improve the quality of the food in the tiffin box.

Mrs Chandra, Principal of St Mary’s Convent, felt the need to educate children on how cleanliness leads to a healthy living. “Our Swacch Paanch Abhiyan has five verticals – cleaning school, making paper bags to avoid using plastic bags, educating people in the community about segregating wet waste from dry, cleaning public parks and markets. All these are followed by students. This was done to channelize the energy of students in a right way. We are glad our initiative is getting recognized,” she said.

Talking about their school’s efforts to reduce the weight of schools bags, Mrs. Geeta Subramaniam, principal of Euro School Chimney Hills said “The initiative was started to make sure the children don’t suffer from any health issues due to the weight of their school bags and we are proud that the initiative is appreciated by parents and students alike. The management has replicated the rule by Government of Maharashtra which says that the weight of the school bags should not exceed 10 per cent of the students’ body weight. The school management has set up a panel of five members under the vice principal which gives suggestions on how to reduce the weight of the bags.

Mr. N. Jagadish, Chairman of VVR School, which provides Preventive Dental Service in the school campus said “The measure was taken to make sure that my students are able to improve their much neglected oral hygiene at a very affordable cost. We also have a trained nurse and a full-time dentist present at the school during the school hours.” All the children in the school, undergo preventive dental procedures (Dental Cleaning, Fluoride Application of the teeth, Pit & Fissure Application) twice a year. The dentist visits are scheduled during their free hours. This has resulted in the tremendous improvement in oral hygiene of children. The prevalence of plaque or calculus has fallen from 24% to 5% and dental stains from 10% to 4%.

“Children spend half of their day in school where they consume two meals of their day. We wanted to make sure that they consume healthy and nutritious meals. For which we assess meals they get in their tiffin,” says Mrs Gladias Peter, principal of Carmel Garden Public School. The school has implemented a time table from Monday to Friday for nutritious snacks like sprouts, dry fruits, vegetables, sandwich, fruits etc., which reduces the parents’ worry about what to send on which day.

“Sending feedback to parents helps them understand how they can improve the quality of the meal,” says K. Shailaja, principal of The South School.

The event featured a panel discussion on whether the Measles Rubella Vaccination campaign in schools was a disruption or an innovation?  The panel included Dr Latha, Deputy Director Immunization, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of Karnataka along with principals of various schools in the city such as Mr Chaitanya of Chitrakoota School, Ms Ramalakshmi of Aham Atma Vidyalaya, Ms Snehalatha of Vyasa International School & Ms Usha Ravi of Regency Public School, doctors and parents. The principals voiced their support but wanted the logistics to be well thought out and not be last minute. Most parents are concerned about the safety and hygiene aspects of mass vaccination events. Dr Latha, said, “We have already covered more than 1 crore children in the state and we aim to achieve higher coverage. There is no truth in the unsubstantiated rumours that are being spread using social media. We are countering such rumours with our own education campaign.”

Shukla Bose, founder and CEO of the Parikrma Humanity Foundation said, “Parikrma Humanity Foundation has always been concerned about going beyond the curriculum and academics and we see health as part of the continuum. Through the awards, we are encouraging schools to adopt healthy practices.”

Dr. Anand Lakshman, Chief Executive Officer, AddressHealth, said, “At AddressHealth, we partner with schools to deliver preventive healthcare to maximum number of students. Because only Healthy children are happy children. Last year alone, we found nearly 170 children with undiagnosed heart murmurs in schools, some of whom will need surgical interventions.

About Bharti Foundation:

Bharti Foundation was set up in the year 2000 as the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises. It implements and supports programs in the field of primary, elementary, senior secondary and higher education through the Satya Bharti School Program as well as Government School interventions under its Satya Bharti Quality Support Program and Satya Bharti Learning Centre Program. This year the Foundation has completed 10 successful years of its flagship initiative – the Satya Bharti School Program.

In addition to its primary focus area of education, the Foundation initiated ‘Satya Bharti Abhiyan’ in 2014, to improve sanitation facilities in rural Ludhiana and ‘Nyaya Bharti’ in 2015 to provide legal and financial assistance to deserving underprivileged under-trials languishing in jails across the country for petty offences.

Bharti Foundation is currently reaching out to over 1,30,000 students through 1,500 schools/centres, across 12 Indian states, engaging 4,500 teachers through its initiatives in the education sector. In addition, our programs have impacted over 1 million community members across rural India, since inception. These programs have already been recognized as one of the largest private enterprise initiatives of the country in the education sector. Satya Bharti Abhiyan has also achieved the distinction of having delivered over 17,500 household toilets, directly benefitting more than 86,000 beneficiaries and reaching out to over 1000 villages of Ludhiana. The Abhiyan has entered phase II of implementation by extending its footprint in the urban areas of Ludhiana. This is intended to support the District Administration’s initiative of declaring Ludhiana open defecation free.

Our initiatives:

Ø  The Satya Bharti School Program:

The Satya Bharti School Program is the flagship initiative of Bharti Foundation. This rural education initiative provides quality education to underprivileged children, completely free of cost, with a special focus on the girl child. The program envisions transforming students into educated, confident, responsible and self-reliant employable citizens of India with a deep sense of commitment to their society. The program’s reach is multi-pronged, encouraging active involvement of the rural community, parents of students and like-minded organizations working in the field of education in India. Making a lasting and sustainable impact on the community where schools are present and finding innovative solutions, through its primary and senior secondary schools, to create replicable and scalable components in the program ensures delivery of quality education. The Satya Bharti School Program is being implemented with the intent to arrive at replicable and scalable components of quality education which may be adapted by the Government and other like-minded organizations. Reaching out to thousands of underprivileged children, the program, through its focus on holistic development, aims to bring forth a new generation of citizens eager to usher in positive change. Currently 249 primary/elementary Schools and five senior secondary schools are operational across Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal reaching out to 43,605 children and employing 1,717 teachers. Focusing on the girl child [49% girl students] and the weaker sections of society [75% of children from SC/ST/OBC Communities], the program is one of the largest end-to-end education initiatives by a corporate group in the country.

Ø  Satya Bharti Quality Support Program:

The Satya Bharti Quality Support Program is an education initiative with Government Schools. Through this program, Bharti Foundation engages the school leadership, teachers, students and communities to enhance the schooling experience and strive for excellence. The approach focuses on identifying, integrating and optimising best practices from Satya Bharti Schools with the intent of encouraging innovation, participation, ownership and facilitating a sustainable change. Currently, the program is being run in 169 Government schools directly impacting 57,037 students and 2,555 teachers across seven states of India.

Ø  Satya Bharti Learning Centre Program:

Bharti Foundation operates a remedial/bridge courses program with aim of bridging the education gap of out of school children and mainstreaming them into regular schools. The first phase of the program was deployed in partnership with the Government of Rajasthan and was scaled up to Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, extending program reach to the remote blocks of all three states. Currently, 321 Education Volunteers are engaged in teaching 4,447 out of school children, of which 48% are girls, enrolled at 344* Satya Bharti Learning Centres. Till now, 21,323 children have been mainstreamed, with the total impact reaching up to 29,498 children.

* 821 centres have been closed as most of the OOSC’s in these villages have been mainstreamed (number included in overall impact); in some villages the count of OOSC’s have dropped to such a low figure that it has gone below the minimum numbers required to run a centre, as per Government norms; of these, 58 Centres were closed due to of non-availability of qualified Education Volunteers.

Ø  Nyaya Bharti

'Nyaya Bharti' is one-of-its-kind corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by Bharti Enterprises, one of India's most respected business groups. The primary objective of Nyaya Bharti is to provide aid to underprivileged undertrials who are first time accused of petty offences and require financial and legal assistance to apply for bail and release. New Delhi, December 21, 2016: Minerva offers four-year undergraduate degree in five accredited majors: Arts & Humanities, Computational Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Business.

Minerva students live in seven major cities – San Francisco, London, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Seoul, Hyderabad and Taipei – during their four years of study, developing the nuanced perspective and understanding needed in the modern global economy. At each of these locations, students participate in site-specific programs that push them to apply concepts learned in class to real-world scenarios.

The programming in each city deepens students’ understanding of academic material and reinforces practical skills, while cultivating vital character traits like empathy, resilience, and accountability.

All classes at Minerva are intimate (with a maximum of 18 students), discussion - based and active learning seminars.

The tuition fee at MSKGI is a fraction of the cost of traditional US universities. Moreover, education at Minerva Schools has been made accessible to all qualified students owing to liberal financial aid packages offered to admitted students based on financial need.

Minerva accepted its first class of 28 undergraduate students in September 2014. In 2015, they enrolled 100 more as freshmen, and this fall accepted their third cohort of 150 students.

Minerva endeavors to create better leaders, smarter innovators, and more informed global citizens. Minerva Schools at KGI is backed by investors like Benchmark Capital, TAL, Zhen Fund, and Learn Capital, and are poised to realize their ambitious vision for the future of higher education.
