    Helena Modrzejewska age, wiki, biography

Helena Modjeska's birthday is on 12 October 1840 and birth place is Kraków, Poland. Her birth name was Jadwiga Benda, however, she was subsequently christened as Helena Opid, which was the surname of her godfather. She Died on 8 April 1909 at the age of 68 Years and place of his death was Newport Beach, California, U.S. Her Parents are Józefa (Misel) Benda, and Szymon Benda. Her mother's name is Józefa (Misel) Benda and her father's name is Szymon Benda. By profession Szymon Benda was a successful Kraków trader. The identity of Modjeska's parents remains uncertain. Modjeska stated in her memoirs that her father was a musician called Michael Opid. Michal Opid, a music instructor employed by the Benda family who subsequently served as Helena's godfather. However, Opid did not father Józefa Benda's two youngest kids.  She has 2 siblings. In siblings she has 1 brother and 1 sister. Her brothers name is Adolf  and he is the elder one. There is proof to imply that Helena and her elder brother Adolf were the outcome of an affair that took place between Józefa and Prince Wladyslaw Hieronim Sanguszko, a rich and important Polish nobleman. Her younger sisters name is Josephine. She also has several half-brothers from Józefa's first marriage. Their great-aunt Teresa was mostly responsible for Helena and Josephine's upbringing.

In Helena Modrzejewska autobiography, Modjeska also left out details about her first marriage to Gustave Sinnmayer  (Polish: Gustaw Zimajer), who had been her guardian. By profession Gustave Sinnmayer was an actor and the director of a mediocre regional theater group. It is not clear when Modjeska and Gustave Sinnmayer got married. She found out several years later that they were not officially married since he was still married to his first wife when they tied the knot. They welcomed two kids, a boy named Rudolf later renamed Ralph Modjeski, and a girl Marylka, who passed away when she was very young. Gustaw Zimajer was better known by his stage name, "Gustaw Modrzejewski." When Modjeska went on stage for the first time in 1861, she was called Helena Modrzejewska, which is the feminine version of this name. Afterwards in her career, when she started performing overseas, she shortened her name to "Modjeska," which was more simpler and easier for people to say in English. In Poland, Modrzejewska's initial acting roles were in Brzeżany, Bochnia, Przemyśl, Nowy Sącz, and Rzeszów. She made her debut in Lwów, in 1862, portraying the role of "Skierka" in Juliusz Słowacki's romantic production Balladyna. She acted in dramas by Sowacki at Stanisawów and Czerniowce from 1863 onwards.

Zimajer made an attempt to get a deal for her with theaters in Vienna; in 1865. However, the endeavor was unsuccessful owing to her lack of proficiency in German. Helena Modrzejewska parted ways with Zimajer, in the latter part of that year, taking their boy Rudolf with her as she headed back to Kraków. Once she got there, she immediately committed to a four-year acting gig. She started performing in Warsaw, in 1868. During the eight years she spent there, she became a leading theater actress. In Poland, her half-brothers Józef and Feliks Benda were also well-known actors.

Modjeska exchanged vows with a Polish nobleman by the name of Karol Bożenta Chłapowski, on September 12, 1868. He was well known in the United States as "Count Bozenta".His family was part of the nobility without a title (ziemiaństwo). In the U.S., he used the name "Count Bozenta" as a way to get more attention. The people that spoke English found it far simpler to say the name "Bozenta" than they did ""Chłapowski.""Chłapowski was employed as the editor of a liberal nationalist newspaper called Kraj (The Country), which belonged to Adam Sapieha and a Mr. Sammelson, when they got married. Modjeska stated that their residence "became the center of the artistic and literary world [of Kraków]". Poets, writers, politicians, musicians, painters, and other actors often visited Modjeska's salon.

After ruling as the reigning diva of the Polish national theater for over a decade, Modjeska and her husband made the decision to relocate to the United States in July 1876 for a number of reasons, including personal as well as political considerations. The one thing that my husband wanted more than anything was to whisk me away from my current place and provide me with complete respite from my duties is what she stated. Henryk Sienkiewicz is credited as being the first person to urge for emigration. Slowly but surely, others joined him, and before long, there were five of them who voiced an interest in exploring the forests in the virgin land. After seeing the zeal of the young guys, her husband came up with the concept of establishing a colony in California that would be patterned after the Brook Farm. The undertaking was hailed as a brilliant idea by everyone who heard about it.

After arriving in the United States, Modjeska and her husband made the decision to buy a ranch in the area of Anaheim, California. Among the companions who had traveled to California with them were Julian Sypniewski, Łucjan Paprowski, and Henryk Sienkiewicz, who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1905. During this time, Sienkiewicz penned his Charcoal Sketches (Szkice węglem). The artists Stanislaw Witkiewicz  and Adam Chmielowski were supposed to join with Modjeska's group at first, but they ended up changing their minds later. She had every intention of giving up on her professional life and replacing it with "a life of toil beneath the blue sky of California, amid the hills, riding on horseback with a rifle over my shoulder." The truth was less dramatic than the movie. In addition to having little to no knowledge of farming or ranching, the colonists also had a difficult time communicating in English. Following the failure of the utopian experiment, the colonists went their own ways, and Modjeska went back to theater, where she played the same Shakespearean parts as she had in Poland. Theodore Payne's autobiography, titled Life on the Modjeska Ranch in the Gay Nineties, is widely considered to be the work that provides the most detailed depiction of ranch life.

On 8 April 1909, at the age of 68 years, Modjeska passed away from Bright's disease at Newport Beach, California. Her body was transported to Kraków so that it may be placed in the family grave at the Rakowicki Cemetery there. The posthumous publication of her autobiography, titled Memories and Impressions of Helena Modjeska, occurred in the year 1910. In the same year, a Polish version was published in the Kraków newspaper Czas (Time). In 1957, the book was published in its final Polish version. Rudolf Modrzejewski, better known by his professional name Ralph Modjeski, was the son of Modrzejewska. He was a civil engineer who became famous for his work of designing bridges.

Although it is a work of fiction, Susan Sontag's award winning book "In America," in 1999, is inspired on Modjeska's life. In Willa Cather's short story "My Mortal Enemy," Modjeska was one of the fictional characters. Helena Modjeska (1840–1909): For the Love of Art was an exhibition that was held at the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków from 8 April 2009 through 20 September 2009 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the artist's demise. This exhibition was also held in Warsaw from October 2009 to January 2010. The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, contributed some of its collection to the display. On the 181st anniversary of her birth, which took place on October 12th, 2021, a Google Doodle was created to pay tribute to Modjeska.

    Helena Modrzejewska Career

Scholars Joanna and Catharina Polatynska have claimed that Arthur Conan Doyle based the character Irene Adler on Modjeska. Irene Adler was the only lady whom Sherlock Holmes almost loved. The personality of the fictional character, Adler, is reminiscent of that of the real actress, Modjeska, who was at the pinnacle of her theatrical career in Warsaw during the same years that Doyle mentions in "A Scandal in Bohemia" that Adler was the prima donna of the fictional Imperial Opera of Warsaw.

Modjeska's first performance was at the California Theater in San Francisco, in an English adaptation of Ernest Legouvé's play Adrienne Lecouvreur on 20 August 1877. Helena Modrzejewska was discovered by the theater agent Harry J. Sargent, who subsequently signed her up for a tour of the east coast. Her first show was in New York. From 1879 to 1882 she moved overseas mostly to London, to try to improve her English before going back on the stage in America. She traveled to the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall in 1880 and, while there, she learned that the parish church of Ruan Minor required an organ. In response, she began working with Mr. J. Forbes-Robertson to arrange a concert. The play Romeo and Juliet was put on in the garden of the vicarage on a makeshift stage, and many people in the area came to witness it. Charles Campbell Ross, who lives in Penzance and will shortly be a member of parliament for St. Ives, played the role of Friar Laurence. Helena Modrzejewska was very successful even though her English was not excellent and she spoke with an accent.

Helena Modrzejewska was known for her portrayals of nine different Shakespearean heroines, as well as Marguerite Gautier in Camille and Maria Stuart by Schiller, all through her career. Helena Modrzejewska became a citizen of the United States in 1883, the same year she brought Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House to the stage in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the maiden time an Ibsen play had been performed in the United States. She was widely regarded as the most accomplished Shakespeare female translator on the American stage, in the 1880s and 1890s. When Modjeska was asked to speak at a women's conference at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, she addressed the plight of Polish women living in portions of Poland governed by Russia and Prussia at the time. Because of this, the tsar placed restrictions on her ability to travel inside Russian territory.

In 1897, Helena Modrzejewska had a stroke that left her partly paralyzed. Nevertheless, she made a speedy recovery and quickly returned to the theater, where she resumed acting for many more years. Helena Modrzejewska performed on stages in Lwów, Poznań, and her hometown of Kraków during her final visit to Poland, which lasted from the 31st of October 1902 to the 28th of April 1903. New York City was the location of her jubilee concert, which took place on May 2, 1905. After that, she went on tour for two years before she stopped acting. After that, she only showed up occasionally to promote charity initiatives.
