George Halas sent Dick Barker a telegram after he completed his graduation. Halas invited Dick Barker to join the Chicago Staleys, which later became the Bears and was a part of the American Professional Football Association. Dick Barker who was unemployed and broke at the time, decided to accept the deal and play with the Staleys during the 1921 season.Because of this, Dick Barker became the very first Cyclone to ever compete in a professional football game. In that season, the club reached two significant milestones. Firstly, the Bears and the Packers played their debut game against each other as rivals, and secondly, the Staleys claimed the league title. After playing football professionally for just one season, Barker came to the conclusion that there was neither a financial nor a career opportunity for him in the sport. As a result, he returned to Ames to work as an assistant coach for his former school, Iowa State, under the direction of Sam Willaman.
Dick Barker got his start in the coaching profession in 1922 as a assistant football coach at Iowa State University. In addition to his role as an assistant football coach at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, he was given the responsibility of establishing the college's first-ever wrestling program in the next season. Dick Barker was offered a job at the University of Michigan in 1923 to carry out the same process of establishing a wrestling program, and working as an assistant football coach. Dick Barker was employed by Cornell once again in 1925, to fill the roles of head football coach, head wrestling coach, and athletic director.
Under Dick Barker direction, the Cornell wrestling program was very successful. During his 36 seasons the Rams, had a record of 73–48–2 and six finishes in the top 20 of the NCAA. In addition, he guided numerous wrestlers to remarkable individual accomplishment, including one NCAA champion in Dale Brand and four prospective Olympians in Kenneth Truckenmiller in 1924, Lloyd Appleton in 1928, Lyle Morford in 1932 and Dale Brand in 1936.In the freestyle competition, Appleton earned a silver medal in the 158.5 weight class. Dick Barker was instrumental in the development of the first set of regulations for college wrestling as well as assisted in planning the inaugural tournament held by the NCAA in 1928. He served as an assistant coach for the United States wrestling squad in the 1928 Olympic Games.
