Newton-John raced in the Formula Holden Tasman Cup in 2000 and 2001, coming very close to claiming his first event in the series. In 2001, he also raced in the Formula Holden Australian Drivers' Championship, finishing fifth overall with a best outcome of second place. Additionally, he raced in the French Renault Megane Cup and tested a Formula Three car. On September 10, 2001, he competed in his last Formula Holden race. As a direct consequence of the events on September 11, 2001, Newton-John was unable to get financial support for his open-wheel career, and he transitioned into stock cars instead.In November of 2001, Newton-John made his first appearance in stock car racing by taking part in the ARCA Re/MAX Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He started at the back of the field and made it as high as 12th. He came in 15th place. He raced in his first NASCAR competition, a Craftsman Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2002. He came 31st in the event, after a weekend that Newton-John termed as "disastrous." Newton-John made his comeback to the world of professional racing in 2012, participating in a test session at Iowa Speedway driving an open-wheel formula car for the first time in over eleven years.After successfully completing a refresher test, he went on to participate in the Freedom 100 Firestone Indy Lights event as a driver for the Fan Force United team owned by Tyce Carlson.During practice, he had the sixth quickest time, but in qualifying, he ended up in eighth place.On the fifth lap of the competition, he was engaged in an accident involving many cars, and as a result, he was given credit for ending in 17th position. Later in the year, he participated in another Indy Lights race, which took place at the Grand Prix of Baltimore. Unfortunately for him, his rear suspension failed twice, causing him to crash both in the event's qualifying round and the race itself. He ended up placing 12th out of the 13 cars in the field.Newton-John competed in the ARCA Racing Series once again in 2014, this time with Carter 2 Motorsports at Madison International Speedway.He completed the race in 23rd place, driving as a start-and-park competitor.
