Newton-John raced in the Formula Holden Tasman Cup in 2000 and 2001, coming very close to claiming his first event in the series. In 2001, he also raced in the Formula Holden Australian Drivers' Championship, finishing fifth overall with a best outcome of second place. Additionally, he raced in the French Renault Megane Cup and tested a Formula Three car. On September 10, 2001, he competed in his last Formula Holden race. As a direct consequence of the events on September 11, 2001, Newton-John was unable to get financial support for his open-wheel career, and he transitioned into stock cars instead.In November of 2001, Newton-John made his first appearance in stock car racing by taking part in the ARCA Re/MAX Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He started at the back of the field and made it as high as 12th. He came in 15th place. He raced in his first NASCAR competition, a Craftsman Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2002. He came 31st in the event, after a weekend that Newton-John termed as "disastrous."
